Monica was born and raised in Philly and was always curious about how a dress or any type of garment was made. As a young girl, she would cut her mom’s curtains and make her Barbie’s different outfits and had fashion shows with all her dolls. Little did she know that she’d eventually partner up with a fellow fashionista who also made clothes for her Barbie dolls and wanted to pursue an entrepreneurial path in fashion.
In high school, Monica took a sewing class and from that first class she was obsessed with the idea of being able to make anything she wanted to wear. Even if she couldn't do it, she would always figure out a way to make it look like the idea she had in her head.
Being a child of the 90s, Monica was influenced by Destiny’s Child’s style. She remembers learning about how Beyonce’s mom would always make them creative matching one-of-a-kind outfits for tours and award shows and Monica was always so excited to see what they were going to wear next and always so intrigued by Tina Knowles making these outfits herself.
IN THE FAMILY
Fashion runs in Monica’s family. She remembers fondly a story with her Aunt.
“My Aunt Marie was designed and sewed clothes when she was younger. One time I made a dress and my Aunt seen me wear it and started getting emotional. I'm like "Aunt Marie" why are you crying you don't like my outfit"? She said no sweetie, I made this same outfit 20 years ago. I immediately got chills. It was pretty cool to hear.”
Monica and Janae joined forces in (2002) and after a few years of hard work, opened Aci Nae boutique in 2008. Her fondest and happiest memory was the day of their grand opening and sharing that moment with close friends and family. Her mission with Aci Nae and her greatest hope? Monica wants the brand to become a staple in every woman’s closet.
